Blue Spirulina Healing Gummies

Gummies are the perfect snack for kids and adults alike. However, most store-bought gummies contain refined sugars like glucose syrup, sugar, dextrose or artificial flavors and colors, which doesn’t make them the healthiest option.
Homemade gummies can be made with real super food ingredients like vegetables, protein-rich gelatin and no refined sugar! Great for picky eater children or adults that resist eating lots of “good stuff”.  You can even use greens powder or blend up chia, hemp, flax seeds too and incorporate into a gummy.
Now lets look at the incredible blue colour this gummy recipe has.
Blue Spirulina,  a well-known antioxidant superfood, is the magic ingredient that makes any food look Instagramable (#trendy). This intense deep blue pigment is known as phycocyanin and is extracted from spirulina (blue-green algae).
It is super healthy, rich in protein, vitamins, minerals, iron, carotenoids and antioxidants and helps protect cells from damage. It is freeze dried to preserve its natural colour and nutrients.
You can get creative and add this beautiful nature product to literally anything for a heavenly nutritional boost and some epic blue instaworthy pictures!
You can add it to water, juices, smoothies, breakfast food, baked food, sweets, yoghurts, cereals or any other foods. For light blue shades, use just a pinch and for a more brilliant blue, use up to the full teaspoon (or more).
Its known to have high nutritional value and boosts the immune system, increases metabolism and improves digestion! Contains an abundance of B vitamins which can enhance energy levels.
Who knew algae could be so wonderful?
Loaded with nutrients and so much better for you than store-bought. A great option for an easy and healthy all-natural snack with protein and no artificial junk in them!
There is also a health boost from gelatin in these gummies.
Gelatin makes up almost one-third of all the protein in our bodies and not having enough affects our joints, our skin and our gastro system.
Gelatin is a colorless and tasteless protein made from hydrolyzed collagen, which means it is part of the broken-down collagen. It provides important amino acids which are the building blocks of protein.
Gelatin also has a ton health benefits – supporting digestive and gut health, maintaining strong bones, helping with joint pain, strengthening tendons, improving skin health, and can even help improve sleep.
Incorporating two superfoods like blue spirulina and grass-fed gelatin we end up with a really easy food that acts as medicine for both adults and children, and is such an easy and fun snack to make.
Grass-fed gelatin forms a strong part of almost any traditional diet, and while it might be hard to add its in its traditional form daily (like with bone broth or marrow) it is easy to supplement your diet with gummies.
These homemade healing gummies are so simple to make, and are full of nutrients to reduce inflammation and enhance health in your body. They are packed with gelatin and collagen, powerful amino acids for full body wellness.
Great for the whole family. Plus - kids just love them.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup apple juice
  • 1/4 cup gelatin (preferably grass-fed)
  • 1 tablespoon honey or maple syrup
  • 2 teaspoons blue spirulina powder

Coating

  • 1/4 cup granulated stevia or sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon powdered citric acid added to the granular coating (optional for a sour touch)

Instructions

  • Add ½ cup apple juice to a small saucepan, and set aside an additional half cup of juice.
Stir the gelatin into the cup of juice (that is not in the saucepan). Mix well, and set aside for 10 minutes for the gelatin to ‘bloom’ and soak up the liquid. This is an important step to prevent clumps.
Heat the juice (without the gelatin) in the saucepan over low/medium heat until the juice starts to steam.  Do not bring the juice to a boil, just warm it.
Take off the heat and add the gelatin and juice mixture to saucepan with the warm juice. Stir until the gelatin is dissolved and no lumps remain.
    Mix in the honey.
Once all has dissolved, remove it from the heat and pour the mixture into silicon moulds, ice trays, or a small dish or pan.
Place in the fridge to set for 2-3 hours.
Pop the gummies out of the moulds, or cut into squares or cubes.
If preferred roll the gummies in the sour sugar until fully coated.
Store uncovered at cool room temperature for up to 1 week, covered in the refrigerator (separate with layers of parchment) for up to 2 weeks, or in in the freezer (in a container between layers of parchment) for up to 3 months.
