Chocolate Orange Brownie Protein Balls

Chocolate Orange Brownie Protein Balls

If you love the combination of rich chocolate and zesty orange, these Chocolate Orange Brownie Protein Balls are going to become a new favourite.

They taste like a little bite of chocolate brownie with a bright burst of orange running through every mouthful. They are rich, fudgy and naturally sweet, but unlike a traditional brownie, there’s no oven required. Just blend, roll and enjoy!

This is exactly the kind of recipe I love at Blended Bites. It takes a handful of simple ingredients and turns them into something that feels like a proper treat while adding protein, healthy fats and satisfying ingredients to your day. Because healthy eating does not have to mean giving up dessert. It can simply mean making your dessert work a little harder for you.

The Chocolate Orange Combination

There is something wonderfully nostalgic about chocolate and orange together. The deep, rich flavour of cocoa balances beautifully with the bright citrus flavour of orange. The result is a combination that tastes much more indulgent than the ingredient list suggests.

For these protein balls, we are using unsweetened cocoa powder for that rich chocolate flavour and fresh orange zest to give them their distinctive citrus kick. The orange zest is particularly important because that is where so much of the natural orange aroma lives. A little goes a long way.

If you want an even stronger orange flavour, add a small amount of freshly squeezed orange juice or a few drops of natural orange extract.

A Brownie You Don’t Have To Bake

The texture of these protein balls is what makes them so delicious. Almond flour gives the mixture a soft, almost brownie-like texture while nut butter adds richness and helps everything hold together. Protein powder adds protein while also helping create that dense, fudgy consistency.

A little maple syrup or honey provides natural sweetness, while vanilla and a pinch of salt round out the chocolate flavour. There is no flour to cook, no eggs and no complicated preparation. Just mix everything together until you have a soft dough that can be rolled into balls.

Why Almond Flour?

Almond flour is made from finely ground almonds and is a wonderful ingredient for no-bake recipes. It adds a naturally nutty flavour and gives these brownie protein balls their soft, satisfying texture. It also pairs beautifully with both chocolate and orange.

If you don’t have almond flour, you can substitute finely ground almonds. The texture may be slightly different, but the recipe will still work.

Protein-Packed And Satisfying

One of the things I love about protein balls is how easy they make it to add protein to everyday snacks. The protein powder provides a convenient protein boost, while almond flour and nut butter contribute healthy fats and help make these little bites more satisfying.

They are perfect when you want something sweet between meals, after exercise, or when that afternoon chocolate craving appears. And because they are portion-sized, they are easy to keep in the fridge or freezer for whenever you need a quick homemade treat.

Make Them Extra Chocolatey

Want to take the brownie experience even further?

Add a handful of mini dark chocolate chips to the mixture before rolling. You could also coat or drizzle the finished balls with melted dark chocolate and sprinkle a little extra orange zest over the top.

For a beautiful finishing touch, roll them in finely chopped almonds, shredded coconut or cacao powder. A tiny pinch of flaky sea salt is another delicious option. Chocolate, orange and sea salt make a surprisingly good combination.

A Simple Freezer-Friendly Treat

These protein balls are perfect for making ahead. Keep them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for several days, or freeze them for longer storage. They can be enjoyed straight from the fridge, or allowed to sit at room temperature for a few minutes to soften.

I often recommend making a double batch because they disappear quickly!

They are also wonderfully portable, making them easy to pop into a lunchbox, take to work or keep ready for those moments when you need a quick snack.

The Blended Bites Way

At Blended Bites, I am all about Addition Eating.

That means instead of focusing on everything you need to remove from your diet, look at what you can add to make your everyday food more nourishing and satisfying.

These Chocolate Orange Brownie Protein Balls are a perfect example. You get the rich chocolate flavour, the delicious citrusy orange and that fudgy brownie texture – while also adding protein and nourishing ingredients.

No baking. No complicated ingredients. No need to give up the treats you love. Just delicious little bites that taste like dessert and fit beautifully into an everyday, balanced approach to eating.

So go ahead and make a batch. Keep them chilled, grab one when the chocolate craving hits and enjoy every bite. 🤎

Ingredients

  • 1 cup almond flour
  • 1/2 cup chocolate or vanilla protein powder
  • 1/2 cup natural nut butter- almond, cashew or peanut butter
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup or honey
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Zest of 1 large orange
  • 1-2 tablespoons fresh orange juice, as needed
  • Pinch of sea salt

Optional Add-Ins

  • 1/4 cup mini dark chocolate chips
  • 1 tablespoon cacao nibs
  • Extra orange zest
  • Melted dark chocolate for coating or drizzling
  • Finely chopped almonds or shredded coconut for rolling

Instructions

  • Add the almond flour, protein powder, cocoa powder and salt to a mixing bowl. Stir to combine.
Add the nut butter, maple syrup or honey, vanilla and orange zest.
Mix well until the ingredients begin to form a soft dough.
Add the orange juice, one tablespoon at a time, until the mixture is moist enough to hold together when pressed. Don't add too much - you want a soft, fudgy consistency rather than a wet mixture.
If using, fold through the chocolate chips or cacao nibs.
Refrigerate the mixture for about 20–30 minutes if it feels too soft to roll.
Using your hands, scoop out approximately 1 tablespoon of mixture and roll into balls.
Enjoy immediately, or refrigerate until firm.
For an extra-special finish, dip, coat or drizzle with melted dark chocolate and sprinkle with a little fresh orange zest.
Storage: Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. They can also be frozen for up to 2 months. Thaw for a few minutes before eating.
Tip: Protein powders vary in how much liquid they absorb. If the mixture is too dry, add another teaspoon of orange juice or milk. If it is too sticky, add a little extra almond flour.
