Oh, jello … the sugar (or chemical) laden mystery food of hospitals and cafeterias. As a child I got my fair share of this stuff back then.
Now we are more aware the “Jell-o” gelatin in stores is packed with sugar (or artificial sweeteners), dyes, additives, and gelatin from factory-farmed animals. Not really what you want to put into your body or those of your family.
Skip the box! When you can make homemade gelatin squares (aka “finger jello”) with a few ingredients and 5 minutes, healthy snacks are a cinch.
Healthy gelatin from grass-fed animals can be an incredible protein source and something you can feel good about eating.
If you are looking to add more protein to your diet here is one of my favorite simple to make, high protein sweet snacks. These blueberry gelatin squares are great to have on hand for a healthy snack or dessert. They make a delicious change from boxed fruit flavored gelatin.
There are so many amazing benefits that can come from eating gelatin, including improvements in digestive, skin, and mental health. Plus, gelatin can be used to make a yummy, all-natural dessert that’s actually good for us and this recipe is a simple way to get gelatin into your diet.
Gelatin is a protein product derived from collagen and has many important health benefits due to its unique combination of amino acids is beneficial for your skin, joints, nails and gut, increases brain function and helps reduce the signs of skin aging, improving the appearance of skin and hair.
If you want to add some variety to this basic recipe you can switch up the flavors by adding different flavor extracts or sweet spices like cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice, ginger, nutmeg and so on.
And lastly you can add additional ingredients like chopped nuts, desiccated coconut, fresh berries or fruit.
It’s no surprise that when talking about gut health, inevitably gelatin and collagen come up. Collagen is a broken down version of gelatin though retaining the same amino acids but containing different chemical components.
When thinking about healthy food and gut health, jello may not be the first thing one thinks about. But this jello is different. The main ingredient in it is gelatin (I know so obvious). Not many people think of gelatin as a super food but in my opinion it is that and more.
Gelatin is not a food that’s commonly used in the standard American diet and some have said that this may be a missing piece in our diet. In older times, people used to eat the entire animal (skin tendons, etc), so obtaining crucial amino acids was not a problem. In today’s world everything seems to be skinless and boneless with very little fat, therefore most of us miss out on these key nutrients.
This healthy and nutrient-dense Blueberry Jello Recipe is simple to make, improves the health of your gut, and is a simple way to consume more gelatin.
