Cottage cheese ice cream is a protein-rich, healthier frozen dessert alternative that has gained popularity as a viral social media trend. It’s made by blending cottage cheese with a sweetener (like honey or maple syrup) and flavorings until smooth, then freezing the mixture. The resulting treat has a tangy flavor similar to frozen yogurt or cheesecake filling.
Who would have thought that cottage cheese would make a comeback? Honestly, I’m not mad about it. Say what you would like about cottage cheese, but it’s truly a winner in my books! Similar to Greek yogurt, it has a thick, creamy texture and can be enjoyed sweet or savoury. It’s also high in protein, making it the perfect secret ingredient in my protein ice cream recipe. And for those of you who want to hop on the cottage cheese train but can’t get over the curd texture, this recipe is for you!

I always keep some cottage cheese in the fridge so I can whip up this healthy treat quickly. Take a few minutes out of your day to make this simple recipe. It is designed for those who want just the right amount of protein-packed goodness to support your healthy lifestyle goals and offers a convenient, satisfying snack without compromising on flavor or nutrition.
Why you will love this recipe:
Protein-rich: The main appeal of this dessert is its high protein content compared to traditional ice cream, making it a more filling, health-conscious treat. Compared to traditional ice cream, it has 4 times more protein per half cup, with fewer overall calories.
Easy to make: Most recipes require only a few ingredients and no special equipment beyond a blender or food processor and a freezer-safe container.
Customizable: This base recipe is simple and can be easily customized with various mix-ins and flavors, such as fresh or freeze-dried fruit, chopped nuts, nut butter or chocolate chips.. Change it up to see what you like most! Or enjoy plain and as-is.
Texture: The texture is typically lighter than traditional ice cream and can become icy when fully frozen due to the water content of cottage cheese. If fully frozen I recommend allowing it to thaw at room temperature for 10-20 minutes before scooping for a creamier consistency, or stirring periodically during the freezing process.
Substitutions and Variations:
This cottage cheese ice cream can be customized any way you like, so dream up some fun flavor combinations! The easiest way to switch it up is by adding different fruits. Here are some other fun ideas to mix it up:
Blueberry Lemon: Use blueberries and add lemon zest.
Strawberry Cheesecake: Use strawberries and graham cracker crumbles. Bonus points if you swirl in some strawberry chia jam!
Peanut Butter Chocolate: Swirl in peanut butter and finish with chocolate chips.
Chocolate Magic Shell: Melt some chocolate chips with a teaspoon of coconut oil, then pour on your ice cream before it goes into the freezer. Once it sets, you will have the most delicious chocolate shell to crack!
Caramel: Swirl in some caramel sauce for a super decadent treat.
I love including protein and healthy fat in my breakfasts, snacks, treats, and desserts because both protein and fat are very satisfying macronutrients. When we feel nicely satisfied, we are less likely to overeat. This recipe has those things to keep you fuller for longer.
Cottage cheese is really good for you. Not only is it full of protein and packed with nutrients, it is low in calories. About 80% of the protein in cottage cheese is casein, which is slowly absorbed by your body, and is ideally consumed before sleep for muscle synthesis.
To harness the true power of cottage cheese, you need to whip it. This goes especially for people – who believe they don’t like cottage cheese and I think the issue is related to texture. But when you give cottage cheese a trip through the food processor or blender, the textural conundrum goes away. All you are left with is a creamy, airy mousse like treat.
Hop on board this popular trend. HAVE FUN and get creative!
