Fun for kids of all ages, even adults love them, these homemade gummy worms aren’t like the typical gummy worms you will find in stores. They are sweetened with fruits with added veggies in the mix. Just easy, no sugar added ingredients that you can feel good about feeding your family.

Healthier gummies are gelatin ‘lollies’ sweetened using honey, vegetable or fruit juice. They are easy to make, contain only a handful of ingredients and use the gut-healing superstar, gelatin.

Gelatin contains amino acids that help seal leaky gut, feed the good bacteria in your intestinal tract, improve sleep, reduce inflammation, reduce sugar cravings and help with joint pain.

Gelatin makes up almost one-third of all the protein in our bodies and not having enough affects our joints, our skin and our gastro system.

Traditionally, through eating all parts of the animal (organ meat, marrow and bones), cooking in animal fats and drinking bone broth or stock, we got enough gelatin. However, because of modern lifestyles, our intake of gelatin-rich foods has drastically decreased.

Gelatin is basically cooked collagen and comes from the bones, hides and connective tissues of animals. Gelatin is found in concentrated amounts in foods like bone broth but also comes in a powdered supplement that ‘sets’ liquids and turns them into jellies.

Gelatin, which is pure protein is great for tissue building and repair, particularly the amino acid Glutamine, which is a great food for enterocytes (gut cells). It also contains vitamin C which supports connective tissue structure and function.

When you take the time to make your own homemade healthier gummies you can make sure they contain no added artificial colours, flavours, sweeteners or preservatives…something that you cannot rely on if you purchase store bought ones. Kids love these jellies and they can be made into fun gummy molds or if you do not have one simply set in a baking pan or dish and cut into squares.

Equipment

  • Gummy worm mold
  • Or a baking pan or dish

Ingredients

Spinach Apple

  • 1 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened apple juice
  • 1/4 cup packed spinach
  • 2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup
  • 3 tablespoons unflavored gelatin

Carrot Apple

  • 1 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened apple juice
  • 1/4 cup cooked carrots, use canned carrots for a quicker option!
  • 2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup
  • 3 tablespoons unflavored gelatin

Instructions

  • Blend each flavour separately. The applesauce, apple juice, honey and veggies (spinach or carrots) in a blender until smooth. Let it blend for 2 plus minutes until the vegetables are completely smooth and dissolved into the puree (we don't want any chunks here!). Taste the mixture at this point and adjust the sweetness as desired.
Pour the mixture into 2 bowls (one for the spinach mix and one for the carrot mix) and sprinkle the gelatin all over the top of each mixture. Let it sit as the gelatin "blooms" for 5 minutes.
After 5 minutes, the fruit and veggie mixture will begin to look wrinkly at the top. Transfer this mixture to 2 small saucepans over medium heat to allow the gelatin to dissolve. You want the mixture to be heated through, not boiling
As the mixture begins to heat up, quickly whisk the mixture until it is smooth and there are no clumps of undissolved gelatin. If you notice any small clumps of gelatin, break them up with a cooking utensil until the mixture is smooth. The mixture should be the same liquid consistency it was when it was blended.
Place the gummy worm molds on top of a baking tray or cutting board. Use a dropper to portion the liquid into the molds. If you would like to make multi-colored worms, fill half of the mold with one flavor and the other half with the other
Transfer to the refrigerator and let the gummies set for at least 2 hours, or overnight. The longer they set, the better. Remove them from the molds and serve!
    Notes:
If you do not have a gummy worm mold, simply pour both flavours into a baking pan or dish and swirl them together with a butter knife. Then cut into small squares when set.
Make sure to use a powerful blender to blend all of the ingredients together. I love using this Nutribullet blender because it ensures that there are no clumps and that the mixture is as smooth as possible.
When placing the liquid into the gummy worm molds, make sure that the molds are on top of a baking pan or cutting board for strength. It will be much easier to transfer the molds to the fridge to set if they are on a solid base.
These gummy worms do not have the same texture as store-bought worms since they don’t have added preservatives, corn syrup, or waxes. They are more jelly-like in texture but if you would like a chewier texture, you can add in an extra tablespoon of gelatin into each flavour of the mix.
You can make gummies with any liquid - could be pureed fruit, fruit juice, coconut water or coconut cream. You can add any extra flavorings like cocoa or vanilla or even lime or lemon for a citrusy twist.
