The world of desserts and sweets is constantly evolving, with new trends and flavors being introduced every day. One such trend that has been making waves in recent times is the cottage cheese trend.
I have to admit – I was completely sceptical of the viral cottage cheese ice cream and mousse trend. As a fitness professional, I have seen SO many “healthy” food trends come and go, and honestly, a lot just kind of fall flat. But I decided to give it a try, and holy moly – I was so impressed! The cottage cheese gives the mousse such creaminess, and gives a subtle cheesecake flavor, too. Plus it adds protein!
With a deliciously rich flavor, creamy consistency, and thick texture … this homemade dessert looks, feels, and tastes like the real deal. I promise you … it is SO GOOD! And no … you can’t taste the cottage cheese one bit.
If you haven’t hopped on the viral cottage cheese trend yet, I don’t blame you, because I was sceptical at first too. But now that I’ve tried so many recipes, both sweet AND savoury, with cottage cheese being the main ingredient… I’m such a fan! If you want a healthy, balanced sweet treat that still feels indulgent or if you are looking for a way to add more protein to your everyday diet then this quick and easy whipped cottage cheese dessert is definitely for you!
It is so yummy and chocolatey rich you would have no idea that the main ingredients are cottage cheese! It’s perfect for a quick snack or treat when that sweet tooth kicks in. Cottage cheese is really good for you. Not only is it full of protein and packed with nutrients, but it is low in calories. About 80% of the protein in cottage cheese is casein, which is slowly absorbed by your body, and is ideally consumed before sleep for muscle synthesis.
To harness the true power of cottage cheese, you need to whip it. This goes especially for people – who believe they don’t like cottage cheese and I think the issue is related to texture. But when you give cottage cheese a trip through the blender, the textural conundrum goes away. All you are left with is a creamy, airy mousse like treat.
If you make this Chocolate Mousse, I recommend you absolutely have to make some whipped coconut cream for the topping (recipe below in notes). Then sprinkle with shaved chocolate and mentally prepare yourself for the richest and most decadent dessert that’s no longer low in fat (because high fat is better for you, until they decide otherwise), but full of beautiful silky smooth chocolate. The combination of the chocolate mousse and the whipped coconut cream is simply divine. Food of the gods for sure. Another one I give the label of HOLY YUM to!
Not only is this mousse insanely delicious and easy to prepare, it also comes with some surprising health benefits. From vitamins and minerals to plenty of healthy fats that support hormone health and neurotransmitter production, this yummy creation is the perfect addition to any healthy eating plan.
How we can use chocolate mousse frosting:
Cakes and cupcakes, baked oatmeal and pancakes: It can add a creamy, protein-rich topping for baked goods or spread it on healthy carrot cake or banana cake. It’s a natural pairing for spice and fruit-based recipes.
Dips and spreads: Serve it as a sweet dip for fresh fruit, graham crackers, or pretzels. It can also be used as a spread on bagels or toast.
Cheesecakes and parfaits: It can be the base for a high-protein, no-bake “cheesecake” or layered into a fruit parfait.
The primary appeal of cottage cheese mousse frosting is its health profile:
Higher protein: One serving of this mousse has 35g of high quality protein, making it a more balanced dessert option. This protein-richness helps provide satiety and can help avoid a sugar crash associated with traditional desserts.
Lower in sugar and fat: When prepared with natural sweeteners like honey, maple syrup, or zero-sugar alternatives, it is significantly lower in sugar and fat compared to butter and powdered sugar-based frostings.
Naturally creamy: Blending cottage cheese in a food processor creates a smooth, silky texture that mimics traditional frosting without added fats.
A sweet treat the entire family will love. Even if someone doesn’t like cottage cheese, this is a chocolate mousse they will love. It’s perfectly sweet and full of chocolate goodness! This recipe is simply a must make! Keep some in the fridge to put a dollop on EVERYTHING!
