If you haven’t yet heard of frozen banana ice cream, you are going to be so stoked.  This is a recipe that can change your life. The only sugar is the natural sugar in the bananas.  It’s simply bananas and milk, that’s right, the healthiest ice cream recipe in the world! It can even be made without milk if you prefer.

One of the things I delight in most is to create healthy alternatives to beloved and familiar treats. Nothing embodies this process more than the following recipe for life-changing banana soft serve. I hesitate to call it a recipe, even, because it’s so ridiculously simple!

This banana soft serve is the absolute BEST creamy, delicious frozen treat!

I have it pretty much every single day. It fits into my day around mid-afternoon to get me through until dinner time. Although its made with just one ingredient I do add some protein powder plus some vanilla extract to make it even more filling and yummo.

If you happen to share my weakness for this type of frozen delight, then this is the treat for you. It’s healthy, made from fresh fruit, and 100% delicious. It’s also kid-friendly and ridiculously simple to make. And, while I’m a big believer that desserts don’t have to be nutritious in order to be worthy, this one happens to be.

That’s right. Who knew that frozen bananas could, if given a spin in the food processor, rival the best frozen ice cream or yogurt in town? Believe me, they do. Once you try this recipe, I guarantee you will crave it as often as I do. Maybe even more often.

In a nut shell, its a healthy banana ice cream whipped into a delicious creamy, soft-serve, custard-like texture. Woohoo! No ice cream maker needed, so there is no waiting for it to freeze!

All you need to make one-ingredient banana ice cream is frozen bananas.

Anytime you have ripe bananas on hand, be sure to freeze them for this easy treat.

Your future self will thank you.

Ingredients

  • 2-3 ripe bananas, cut into slices and frozen
  • optional: splash of milk of choice

Instructions

  • Make sure you have frozen bananas on hand before getting started. I like to slice them into small pieces, so they will break down faster.
Slice ripe bananas into discs and freeze on a parchment-lined baking sheet or in a freezer-safe container with parchment in between the layers. (Don’t freeze bananas with the peel on; it’s hard to remove once frozen!)
You can also freeze bananas whole. They are easy to measure for smoothie recipes and ice cream later. It’s easy to break them in half or slice them into smaller pieces after they are frozen!
In a food processor or blender, blitz frozen bananas until the creamy consistency of soft serve ice cream. See below for my recommendations for what type of equipment is needed.
Scrape the sides down every so often for even blending.
Best served immediately or store in the freezer for up to 3 months.
The classic banana ice cream recipe is relatively mild in flavor, so try one of the following to make it taste even better.
Peanut Butter. Add 1 tablespoon of creamy peanut butter per frozen banana you use.
Strawberry. Add 1/2 cup frozen strawberries .
Chocolate. Add 1 tablespoon cocoa powder and add a splash of vanilla extract or almond butter for a creamier chocolate banana ice cream.
The combinations are endless, so feel free to add any other ingredients you like.
    Other mix-ins or toppings:
Once your soft serve is ready, you can jazz it up with the addition of favorite add ins! Min include melted chocolate, peanut butter, chocolate chips, cinnamon, and toasted coconut flakes. You can either sprinkle these add-ins on top, or you can quickly pulse or blend them into the soft serve to distribute them.
Sprinkle toppings like shredded coconut, roasted chopped peanuts, or caramel sauce.
    Making banana soft serve:
Food processor - There are two ways to make banana soft serve: with a food processor, or in a blender. I’m devoted to using a food processor. I think it gives the soft serve the richest, creamiest texture. If you are willing to be patient, you won’t need to add any milk to get a beautiful, whipped, smooth texture. The downside of this method is that it can be noisy and dramatic. And of course, you will need a powerful food processor (at least 7 cups) to do it.
Blender - You can also use a blender to make your banana soft serve. If you do, you will probably need to add some milk to get things blending. How much milk you add will depend on the blender you use: the more powerful, the less milk you will need to add. If you have a blender with a tamper, you can use that to keep the bananas blending without using a lot of liquid.
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 3 months. It will be super hard straight out of the freezer so leave it a room temp for 10-15 minutes before eating.
