If you are looking for a sweet treat that is rich, and surprisingly good for you, these delightful bites with creamy banana, peanut butter and date filling are just what you need. Not only do they satisfy your sweet tooth, but they also offer a healthier alternative to traditional desserts. They are naturally plant-based, gluten-free and require no baking, made with just 6 basic ingredients.

I love being creative with chocolatey snacks and these bites combine all of the things I love into one easy no-bake recipe. they have yogurt, peanut butter, banana slices, Medjool dates, chocolate and some protein powder for added protein to keep things balanced.

Unlike most sweets loaded with refined sugar and unhealthy fats, these banana date protein bites are made with wholesome ingredients. And instead of using sugar like traditional candy, this recipe uses dates! Not only is it easier, it’s also much healthier, with all the sweetness coming from the dates.

Why dates?

Dates are a super fruit! They are a great source of nutrients and vitamins such as potassium, magnesium, vitamins B6 and K, calcium and iron, which contribute to various health benefits. They also provide a natural energy boost and are low on the glycaemic index so your blood sugar won’t spike when eating them.

I’ve been making healthy candy type treats using dates for years, ever since I embarked on my healthy eating journey. These bites are such an easy dessert and taste absolutely divine! A great way to satisfy my sweet tooth, but with better-for-me ingredients.

Between the date bark trend and it’s myriad of variations, dates are really have a moment right now. Dates are the unsung heroes of the snack world. Naturally sweet with a caramel-like flavor and a soft, chewy texture, they are basically nature’s candy. But when you pair them with rich, creamy nut butter. That’s when the magic happens.

Dates give this recipe incredible flavour and encase the nut butter for the ultimate deliciousness. Dates are also loaded with fibre, potassium, magnesium, and antioxidants. Plus they contain minerals and vitamins to support brain, digestive, and heart health and protect against disease. You don’t get that from sugar laden store bought candy – nothing to see there but empty calories.

Juicy dates naturally sweeten any recipe and the banana slices in this recipe just add to the creamy goodness! Packed with caramel deliciousness from the dates, crunchy peanut butter and chocolate, of course. Banana slices that have been mixed with thick and creamy coconut yogurt are the ultimate addition and add somewhat of an “ice cream” component. No baking, no fancy equipment – just slice, mix, dip and enjoy. It proves the adage that sometimes the most simple treats are the best.

One of the reasons why candy has been deemed “unhealthy” is because it typically lacks nutrients that work to keep our blood sugar balanced, hormones happy and provide an overall feeling of satiation, hence why most of the time we are still hungry after consuming.

This healthier banana date recipe sneaks in a ton of nutrients to help keep us satisfied. It has an optimal balance of macro-nutrients (protein, healthy carbs and fats + fiber) unlike pretty much all store bought candy. A better for you dessert that still tastes super indulgent. The perfect way to treat yourself or to gift to a loved one.

When you are craving something sweet but don’t want to heat up the oven or spend a lot of time making a dessert, these bites are the perfect solution! They really are the perfect indulgence. They remind me of Snickers ice cream bars, but in bite form and much healthier…

….and OMG… I dare you to just eat one! 😉

Ingredients

  • 8 large Medjool dates, pitted
  • 16 slices ripe banana
  • 1 cup thick, Greek-style creamy, yogurt, plain or vanilla
  • Thick nut butter (I used crunchy peanut butter)

Chocolate Coating

  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil

Instructions

  • Open up the Medjool dates and flatten them as much and possible.
Mix the banana slices with yogurt and protein powder and place two coated slices on each date.
Freeze for 30 minutes and then add a small spoonful of peanut butter on top of the yogurt.
Place back in the freezer for about 30 minutes. then, melt the chocolate chips and coconut oil.

Chocolate Coating

  • Place chocolate chips and coconut oil in small dish and microwave with 20 second bursts stirring between each one until melted and smooth.
Or use double boiler method - (pot of boiling water with a bowl resting on top) melt the chocolate chips and the coconut oil together.
Remove the bites and after checking they are firm and set, working quickly, using two forks, dip one bite at a time into the bowl of melted chocolate until it is fully coated.
Lift the bite from the bowl of chocolate and let any excess drip off, then place it onto a tray lined with baking paper. Repeat with the remaining bites.
Or hold each one with a fork over the melted chocolate and spoon it over letting the excess drip back into the bowl.
Place bites back in the freezer for 30 minutes. Serve and enjoy!
Store in the fridge in an airtight container.
You can pop them in the freezer for 10 minutes before you eat one if a firmer texture is desired!
