Banana Chocolate Yogurt Protein Bites

Yummy, protein-rich, easy to make, batch prep perfect – did I hit all the important snack requirements? Oh, and a little bit of chocolate in the mix because we should not be devoid of indulgence in my opinion. These frozen chocolate banana protein bites are like little delicious bites of ice cream

One of my recipe resolutions is to utilize the silicone ice cube tray more because it is a seriously underrated vessel for making no-bake treats in large batches. It’s simpler than a muffin pan and liners, and much faster than hand rolling individual balls/bites. And the cubes come out the perfect 2-3 bite size that’s easy to pack up and save in your fridge or freezer too.

Tips for customization and substitutions:

Granola. The crunchy bottom layer that adds delicious texture contrast. I personally like to use a plain variety (or ideally homemade!) but you could use one with mix-ins or flavors if that sounds good to you. Or you can use chocolate granola as the base, and even skip the melted chocolate. I personally like the chocolate shell effect, but you could make things slightly healthier with this swap.

Dark Chocolate Chips. Some melted, some on top. You could skip the melted drizzle on the bottom for a less dessert-y version, but personally I love the extra sweet snap mixed in with the granola base.

Greek-Style Yogurt. Yogurt is front and center in this recipe I personally used thick Greek-style yogurt for mine, to add extra protein but any variety of yogurt will work. You can use a flavored yogurt too, or blend fruit in with the yogurt to flavor it yourself. Any of the berry flavors or vanilla would be my top picks.

Peanut Butter. Any nut or seed butter adds a buttery “nutty” flavor-filled complement to the tangy yogurt and also keeps the cubes super creamy and smooth to bite. Or use a peanut butter powder for a flavour boost.

Protein Powder. You can totally skip this ingredient if protein-rich isn’t your goal, but this is a super easy way to bump up the protein content and it blends in so well. I like using a plain/unsweetened variety, but vanilla would be great too. Plant based or not, whatever you like. Use chocolate protein powder for a chocolate fro-yo effect. Or salted caramel protein powder would be really delicious.

Banana. Sliced and submerged in the protein yogurt mixture adds some extra fruit sweetness and flavor. Add other fruits. Banana isn’t the only option, berries would be really yummy tossed in too. Add nuts or seeds or coconut on top. Or any other ice cream topping you think sounds good. Combine all those options together and there really are hundreds of different possible variations!

Ways to enjoy these frozen yogurt protein bites:

Any and all times are appropriate, but I especially love them as a little pre-workout boost or post-workout snack. I also love them as a sweet treat after dinner when I’m craving ice cream but a) don’t have any or b) would be too chilly eating a whole bowl.

As an afternoon lunch dessert. As I’m running out the door. With protein, fat, carbs, and fiber they are a very well balanced snack for most any occasion.

I also love to break one or two up into pieces and add to the top of my smoothie bowl. They are like a mini ice cream bar, but much simpler and so much healthier.

These treats are so easy to make with only a handful of ingredients and zero baking, nothing not to love! And let your taste buds run wild with fun mix-ins.

They completely fulfil any “sweet-tooth” cravings! If you are limiting your sugar intake, you will fall in love with these. The combination of sweet creamy banana, dark chocolate chips, and vanilla is a healthier way to satisfy those chocolate cravings!

There are so many ways to love this simple snack. You can not go wrong having a stash in your freezer as you will find many ways to enjoy these delicious frozen banana yogurt bites.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups thick Greek-style yogurt
  • 1 banana, sliced into 20 slices
  • 1 cup granola, store bought or homemade
  • 3/4 cup chocolate chips (+1/4 cup for topping)
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil
  • 3/4 cup peanut (or any other nut or seed) butter
  • 1/4 cup protein or collage peptides powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  • Use a silicon ice cube tray or use 2 x 12-hole muffin pans lined with paper liners or use a silicon muffin pan.
Fill the bottom of each ice cube cavity with a small spoonful of granola.
Melt the 3/4 cup chocolate chips.
Place chocolate chips and coconut oil in small dish and microwave with 20 second bursts stirring between each one until melted and smooth.
Or use double boiler method - (pot of boiling water with a bowl resting on top) melt the chocolate chips and the coconut oil together.
Once melted, drizzle a small spoonful over top of the granola in each cavity, and tap the tray a few times to distribute.
Blend the yogurt, peanut butter, protein powder and vanilla extract until smooth. Pour into each cavity, filling almost to the top.
Place a banana slice into each cavity, halfway submerging. Top with a few chocolate chips and a drizzle of peanut butter.
    Freeze overnight.
Pop out of the tray, and let soften at room temperature for 5 minutes or so before eating.
Keep in the freezer for up to 1 month.
