If you grew up loving Jaffas, you already know how good the combination of chocolate and orange can be. That rich, chocolatey flavour with a bright burst of orange is one of those combinations that just works. And when you turn it into a creamy Jaffa Protein Smoothie, you get all those nostalgic flavours in a nourishing smoothie that can work for breakfast, a snack, or even a healthy chocolate fix.
This smoothie is creamy, refreshing, naturally sweet, and packed with protein. It tastes a little bit like a chocolate-orange milkshake, but instead of being loaded with sugar, it contains ingredients that help nourish your body and keep you satisfied. And yes – it really does taste like a Jaffa!
What Is a Jaffa?
If you are not familiar with them, Jaffas are a classic chocolate-orange confectionery with a hard orange-coloured shell and chocolate centre. The combination of sweet orange and rich chocolate has become an iconic flavour pairing. You don’t need the actual sweets to recreate that flavour, though. A combination of cacao powder, fresh orange, orange zest, vanilla, and naturally sweet fruit gives this smoothie that unmistakable chocolate-orange taste.
It’s amazing what a little orange zest can do. The zest contains concentrated orange oils, which give the smoothie a much stronger citrus aroma and flavour than orange juice alone.
Why Add Protein?
This is not just a chocolate-orange smoothie. It is a protein smoothie, and that is important.
Smoothies can sometimes contain plenty of fruit but not enough protein or healthy fats to keep you satisfied. You drink it, enjoy the lovely burst of energy, and then find yourself hungry again surprisingly quickly. Adding protein changes the equation.
Protein helps support:
✔ Muscle maintenance and recovery
✔ Feelings of fullness and satisfaction
✔ Steady energy
✔ Healthy eating throughout the day
That is why I like adding a good-quality protein powder to smoothies. It turns something that could simply be a sweet drink into a much more satisfying snack or meal.
And because we are using chocolate protein powder here, it actually enhances the Jaffa flavour. Double win!
The Secret to the Jaffa Flavour 🍊
There are three ingredients doing most of the flavour work:
Cacao powder gives us that deep chocolate taste.
Orange zest provides concentrated citrus flavour and that wonderful Jaffa aroma.
Fresh orange juice adds brightness, natural sweetness, and just enough acidity to balance the chocolate.
A little vanilla ties everything together.
You end up with a smoothie that is rich but refreshing – chocolatey but still light enough to enjoy any time of day.
When To Enjoy Your Jaffa Smoothie
🥤 Breakfast
🍊 Afternoon snack
💪 Post-workout recovery
🍫 Chocolate cravings
✨ Healthy dessert alternative
It is especially good when you want something sweet but don’t want a heavy dessert. The orange keeps it refreshing, while the chocolate and nut butter make it rich enough to feel satisfying.
A Little Nostalgia In A Glass
One of the things I love about recipes like this is that healthy eating doesn’t have to mean leaving your favourite flavours behind.
You don’t have to say goodbye to chocolate.
You don’t have to avoid sweet treats.
And you certainly do not have to give up those nostalgic flavours that remind you of being a kid.
You can simply upgrade them.
This Jaffa Protein Smoothie takes a fun chocolate-orange flavour and combines it with protein, fruit, healthy fats, and other nourishing ingredients.
That is the Blended Bites philosophy.
Add more good stuff. Don’t focus on taking everything away. Because when healthy food tastes this good, nourishing your body becomes something to look forward to.
And this smoothie? It’s basically a Jaffa in a glass – only one your body will thank you for. 🍊

Optional Toppings
- Orange zest

- Few chocolate chips
- Orange slices
Instructions
- Add the almond milk to a high-speed blender.Add the frozen banana, chocolate protein powder, cacao powder, orange segments, orange zest, almond butter, vanilla, sea salt and ice.Blend until completely smooth and creamy.Taste and adjust. Add a little extra orange zest for a stronger citrus flavour or a touch of maple syrup if you prefer it sweeter.Pour into a glass and finish with a little orange zest or cacao nibs.Enjoy immediately.Blended Bites TipsUse the zest! This is probably my biggest tip. The orange zest gives you that beautiful concentrated Jaffa flavour.Don't overdo the orange juice. Too much can make the smoothie thin and overpower the chocolate. Using the whole orange segments gives you flavour and fibre while keeping the smoothie creamy.Want it extra thick? Add more frozen banana or a few extra ice cubes.Want even more protein? Add a little extra protein powder or a spoonful of Greek yogurt.Make it dairy-free: Use plant-based protein powder and your favourite dairy-free milk.Want a dessert-style version? Add a few dark chocolate chips before blending and top with cacao nibs.
