If you grew up loving Jaffas, you already know how good the combination of chocolate and orange can be. That rich, chocolatey flavour with a bright burst of orange is one of those combinations that just works. And when you turn it into a creamy Jaffa Protein Smoothie Bowl, you get all those nostalgic flavours in a nourishing bowl that can work for breakfast, a snack, or even a healthy chocolate fix.
This smoothie bowl is creamy, refreshing, naturally sweet, and packed with protein. It tastes a little bit like a chocolate-orange thickshake, but instead of being loaded with sugar, it contains ingredients that help nourish your body and keep you satisfied.
And yes – it really does taste like a Jaffa!
What Is A Jaffa?
If you are not familiar with them, Jaffas are a classic chocolate-orange confectionery with a hard orange-coloured shell and chocolate centre. The combination of sweet orange and rich chocolate has become an iconic flavour pairing. You don’t need the actual sweets to recreate that flavour, though.
Inspired by the nostalgic Jaffa flavour, this creamy smoothie bowl combines rich cacao and chocolate protein powder with fresh orange, orange zest and banana. The result is thick, creamy and naturally sweet, with that unmistakable chocolate-orange flavour.
It is amazing what a little orange zest can do. The zest contains concentrated orange oils, which give the smoothie a much stronger citrus aroma and flavour than orange juice alone. And because this is a Blended Bites recipe, we are not stopping at flavour. A scoop of protein powder, plus a little nut butter, turns this from an ordinary smoothie bowl into a more satisfying snack or breakfast that can help keep you going for longer.
It is basically dessert in a bowl – but with ingredients that actually nourish you. That is what Addition Eating is all about. β€οΈ
π Why You Will Love This Smoothie Bowl
There is something particularly delicious about chocolate and orange together. The richness of cacao balances beautifully with the fresh citrus, while frozen banana creates the thick, creamy base.
The secret to a really good smoothie bowl is using less liquid than you would for a regular smoothie. You want the blender to work a little harder so you end up with a texture thick enough to eat with a spoon.
The orange zest is important too. Fresh orange gives you the juicy citrus flavour, but the zest contains those lovely fragrant orange oils that make the Jaffa flavour really stand out.
πͺ Don’t Forget the Protein
A smoothie bowl made mainly from fruit can be delicious, but adding protein makes it much more substantial. Protein contributes to feelings of fullness and is also important for maintaining and repairing muscle tissue. Adding protein powder is an easy way to boost the protein content without needing a long list of ingredients. For an even creamier bowl, you can also add a spoonful of Greek yogurt.
This is a great example of Addition Eating – rather than taking foods away, we are simply adding something nourishing to make a delicious snack more satisfying.

A Bowl Full Of Jaffa Flavour
There is something so enjoyable about taking a nostalgic flavour and giving it a fresh Blended Bites makeover. You still get the chocolate-orange combination that makes Jaffa’s so irresistible, but instead of reaching for a packet of sweets, you are blending together fruit, cacao, protein and nut butter to create something creamy, satisfying and genuinely delicious.
No deprivation. No complicated ingredients. No need to give up the flavours you love. Just add a little more nourishment.
That is Addition Eating – and it tastes pretty good. π

- 1/2 cup almond milk, or milk of choice, enough to blend
- 1 scoop chocolate protein powder
- 1 tablespoon cacao powder
- 1 tablespoon almond or peanut butter
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Pinch of sea salt
- 1/2 cup ice
Optional for extra creaminess:
- 2 tablespoons Greek yogurt
Toppings: This Is Where You Can Have Some Fun
- Orange zest
- Cacao nibs
- Chopped dark chocolate
- Orange segments
- Sliced banana
- Coconut flakes
- Chopped almonds or hazelnuts
- Drizzle of nut butter
Instructions
- Place the frozen banana, orange, orange zest, almond milk, chocolate protein powder, cacao powder, nut butter, vanilla and sea salt into a high-speed blender.Blend until thick and creamy.Start blending, stopping to scrape down the sides as needed. Use only enough almond milk to get things moving. The less liquid you use, the thicker your bowl will be.Adjust the flavour.Taste the mixture. If you want a stronger orange flavour, add a little more zest. For extra chocolate richness, add another teaspoon of cacao.Make it extra creamy. If using Greek yogurt, blend it through at the end. You can also add a couple of ice cubes if you want the mixture even thicker.Spoon the thick smoothie mixture into a bowl and pile on your favourite toppings.Finish with the Jaffa touch.A little orange zest and a sprinkle of cacao nibs or finely chopped dark chocolate make the perfect finishing touch.π‘ Blended Bites TipsMake it extra thick:Use a frozen banana and keep the liquid to a minimum. You can always add more almond milk, but you can't easily take it away!Want more orange flavour?Don't rely entirely on orange juice. Fresh orange zest gives you a much more concentrated citrus flavour.Make it dairy-free:Use plant-based protein powder and skip the Greek yogurt or use a dairy-free yogurt.Add more crunch:Top your bowl with chopped almonds, hazelnuts or cacao nibs.Make it more dessert-like:Add a few small pieces of dark chocolate on top. The combination of cold, creamy chocolate-orange smoothie and little chocolate chunks is seriously good.No almond butter?Peanut butter works beautifully too, although it will give the bowl a slightly more pronounced peanut flavour.Β
