Ingredients

  • 1 banana, sliced, frozen
  • 1/2 orange, peeled and segmented
  • Zest of ½ orange
  • 1/2 cup almond milk, or milk of choice, enough to blend
  • 1 scoop chocolate protein powder
  • 1 tablespoon cacao powder
  • 1 tablespoon almond or peanut butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of sea salt
  • 1/2 cup ice

Optional for extra creaminess:

  • 2 tablespoons Greek yogurt

Toppings: This Is Where You Can Have Some Fun

  • Orange zest
  • Cacao nibs
  • Chopped dark chocolate
  • Orange segments
  • Sliced banana
  • Coconut flakes
  • Chopped almonds or hazelnuts
  • Drizzle of nut butter

Instructions

  • Place the frozen banana, orange, orange zest, almond milk, chocolate protein powder, cacao powder, nut butter, vanilla and sea salt into a high-speed blender.
    Blend until thick and creamy.
Start blending, stopping to scrape down the sides as needed. Use only enough almond milk to get things moving. The less liquid you use, the thicker your bowl will be.
    Adjust the flavour.
Taste the mixture. If you want a stronger orange flavour, add a little more zest. For extra chocolate richness, add another teaspoon of cacao.
    Make it extra creamy.
If using Greek yogurt, blend it through at the end. You can also add a couple of ice cubes if you want the mixture even thicker.
Spoon the thick smoothie mixture into a bowl and pile on your favourite toppings.
    Finish with the Jaffa touch.
A little orange zest and a sprinkle of cacao nibs or finely chopped dark chocolate make the perfect finishing touch.
    💡 Blended Bites Tips
    Make it extra thick:
Use a frozen banana and keep the liquid to a minimum. You can always add more almond milk, but you can't easily take it away!
    Want more orange flavour?
Don't rely entirely on orange juice. Fresh orange zest gives you a much more concentrated citrus flavour.
    Make it dairy-free:
Use plant-based protein powder and skip the Greek yogurt or use a dairy-free yogurt.
    Add more crunch:
Top your bowl with chopped almonds, hazelnuts or cacao nibs.
    Make it more dessert-like:
Add a few small pieces of dark chocolate on top. The combination of cold, creamy chocolate-orange smoothie and little chocolate chunks is seriously good.
    No almond butter?
Peanut butter works beautifully too, although it will give the bowl a slightly more pronounced peanut flavour.
