Looking for guilt-free sweets and better-for-you protein treats that actually taste like dessert?
You have come to the right place!
Here at Blended Bites, we do not believe you need to give up sweet treats to eat well. In fact, we think there is a much more enjoyable way to approach dessert.
Instead of asking, “What do I have to cut out?” we can ask, “What can I add?”
Add protein.
Add nuts and seeds.
Add fruit.
Add nourishing fats.
Add delicious flavours.
That is the idea behind our Addition Eating philosophy – creating treats that satisfy your sweet tooth while adding ingredients that nourish your body.
This collection brings together better-for-you sweets, healthy protein treats and easy no-bake desserts that are designed to taste indulgent while being made with simple, nourishing ingredients.
Because dessert should still be fun!
What Makes A Sweet Treat “Better For You”?
There isn’t one magic ingredient that suddenly turns a dessert into a health food. Instead, it is about the ingredients we choose and how we put them together.
A traditional sweet treat might rely heavily on refined sugar and highly processed ingredients. A better-for-you version can include ingredients such as Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, nuts, seeds, fruit, dates, cacao, nut butter and protein powder.
These ingredients can bring protein, healthy fats, fibre, vitamins, minerals and natural sweetness to your treats. And they can taste absolutely delicious.
That is what we are aiming for here.
Nourishment without sacrificing enjoyment.
Add Protein To Your Favourite Sweets
One of the easiest ways to give a dessert a protein boost is to add protein powder. Protein powder can be stirred into yogurt, blended into smoothies, added to protein balls or incorporated into no-bake bars, fudge and bites.
Vanilla protein powder works beautifully in fruity and creamy desserts.
Chocolate protein powder is perfect for brownies, fudge and chocolate bites.
Unflavoured protein powder is useful when you want the other ingredients to take centre stage.
The important thing is to remember that different protein powders absorb liquid differently, so recipes may need a little adjustment to get the texture just right.
Protein Balls & Bites
Protein balls and bites are some of the easiest better-for-you sweets to make.
Start with ingredients such as dates, nuts, nut butter, oats, coconut or seeds. Add protein powder and your favourite flavours – perhaps cocoa, vanilla, cinnamon, lemon, berries or chocolate. Blend everything together, roll into balls and you are done!
For something even more fun, press the mixture into silicone candy molds or ice cube trays to create tiny protein treats. They are perfect for keeping in the refrigerator or freezer for those moments when you want something sweet.
Creamy Protein Desserts
Protein does not have to mean a chewy snack. Creamy desserts are another wonderful way to add protein.
Greek yogurt, cottage cheese and protein powder can be blended together to create incredibly smooth dessert creams, puddings and mousses.
Add berries for freshness.
Add cacao for chocolate.
Add peanut butter for richness.
Add lemon for a bright, cheesecake-style flavour.
The result can feel much more like dessert than a traditional “healthy snack.” And that is exactly the point!
Better-For-You Chocolate Treats
Chocolate lovers definitely have not been forgotten.
Cacao and dark chocolate can be used in all kinds of protein treats, including fudge, bark, brownies, cups, clusters and chocolate-covered bites. Pair chocolate with peanut butter, almonds, coconut, raspberries, strawberries, dates or mint for endless flavour combinations. A little sea salt can also make chocolate taste even more indulgent.
Sometimes the difference between an ordinary snack and an irresistible treat is simply the combination of flavours.
Frozen Protein Treats
The freezer is another wonderful tool for making better-for-you sweets.
Blend frozen bananas with yogurt and protein powder to create a simple protein nice cream. Freeze yogurt and berries in molds for bite-sized frozen treats. Create chocolate-covered frozen yogurt cups. Or make protein popsicles with fruit, yogurt and your favourite protein powder.
Frozen treats are especially refreshing during warmer weather, but there is no reason to wait for summer!
Why Add Protein?
Protein is an important nutrient that helps support muscle maintenance and repair. It can also contribute to the feeling of fullness and satisfaction after eating. That makes it a useful addition to snacks and desserts.
But we are not interested in turning every sweet treat into a nutrition project. Food should still be enjoyable.
Adding protein simply gives us another way to make our favourite treats work a little harder nutritionally.
You do not have to choose between delicious and nourishing.
You can have both.
Natural Sweetness & Simple Ingredients
Many better-for-you treats can also use naturally sweet ingredients such as dates, bananas, berries and a little maple syrup or honey. These ingredients do not make a dessert “healthy” by themselves, but they can add sweetness alongside other nourishing ingredients.
Dates, for example, are wonderfully useful in no-bake recipes because they provide both sweetness and stickiness, helping ingredients bind together.
Bananas add natural sweetness and creamy texture.
Berries bring colour, freshness and flavour.
And nuts and nut butters add richness.
It is all about bringing different ingredients together.
Enjoy Dessert Without The Guilt
I actually prefer to think of these as guilt-free sweets because there is no reason food should make us feel guilty in the first place.
A sweet treat isn’t a moral decision. It is simply food.
What we can do is make choices that help us feel good, enjoy what we’re eating and give our bodies plenty of nourishing ingredients throughout the day. That is where Addition Eating comes in.
Instead of restricting dessert, add more goodness to it.
Add protein.
Add fruit.
Add nuts.
Add seeds.
Add flavour.
Then sit down and enjoy it!
