These orange creamsicle overnight oats are a creamy and refreshing twist on classic overnight oats. Made with citrus flavors, vanilla extract, Greek yogurt and protein powder for added protein, this recipe is bliss in a bowl!
Orange oats will instantly brighten up your mornings. It’s my original recipe blend of rolled oats, milk, yogurt, chia seeds, and honey – but with a fresh and sweet citrus touch. Grab a few jars, stir it all up, let it sit in the fridge overnight, and breakfast is prepped and ready to go!
Meal prepping overnight oats has become a staple in my breakfast routine when I need something quick and filling. And if you are in the same boat, there’s no doubt you will love this orange creamsicle version that’s creamy, dreamy, and citrusy. Greek yogurt and almond milk bring the creamy, while orange juice and zest bring the citrusy-sweet. Together, they give you that ICONIC creamsicle flavor in every bite.
The wonderful thing about overnight oats is that the topping ideas are virtually endless, so have fun with seasonal fruit like mandarin oranges. They are little powerhouses of nutrients, naturally sweet, and easy to peel.
Can you use old fashioned oats for overnight oats?
If you didn’t know this yet, rolled oats are the same thing as old-fashioned oats! Don’t ask me why there are two names… we assume it’s just to confuse people. But either way, old-fashioned oats are perfect for overnight oats because they have a hearty texture that holds up well after soaking in liquid overnight.
Quick-cooking oats also work well for overnight oats, but they will have a softer texture than rolled oats. If you prefer a creamier and less chewy consistency, then quick-cooking oats are the way to go.
There is something about these orange creamsicle overnight oats that have me feeling like a kid again. The combination of creamy and tangy with just the right amount of sweetness is pure perfection! Its just so easy, just dump everything in a mixing bowl, stir, cover, and chill overnight. When you wake up, enjoy your overnight oats straight out of the fridge or warm them up for a cozy breakfast option.
I can literally taste it as I’m writing this post… pardon my drool! 🙂
Checklist for Orange Creamsicle Overnight Oats
Rolled oats: I prefer rolled oats in this overnight oat recipes for their chunky, hearty texture and ability to soak up all the flavors.
Chia seeds: Add a nutritional boost and help thicken the mixture, giving it a pudding-like consistency and come with tons of added health benefits.
Fruit: While you can use any variety of oranges, I love mandarin oranges as they are extra sweet.
Honey or maple syrup: My top choices for natural sweeteners to compliment the creamy orange flavor! Use what works for you and adjust the amount to your liking.
Almond milk: Since this recipe mimics a creamsicle flavor, using a creamy dairy or dairy-free milk will taste extra delicious. I personally love to use almond, coconut, oat, cashew or macadamia milk.
Orange juice: Use freshly squeezed orange juice for the best flavor!
Orange zest: Don’t skip this ingredient! It takes the creamsicle flavor to a whole new level.
Greek-style yogurt: Thick yogurt is my go-to for extra creaminess, protein, and a tangy touch.
Protein or collagen peptides powder. Adding this makes the macro nutrients (protein, carbs, fats) more balanced as part of a modern healthy eating plan (rather than the ancient high carb, low protein recipes). Protein powder also acts as a “flour” and helps give body so the ingredients stick together.
Vanilla extract: Just a splash enhances the overall sweetness for that perfect creamsicle flavor!
Other Tasty Additions to Creamsicle Overnight Oats:
Coconut flakes: Toasted coconut flakes would add a delicious crunch to this recipe.
Almonds or walnuts: Chopped as an add in or topping for some added protein and healthy fats.
More seeds like hemp, sunflower, pumpkin or sesame for more yumminess and crunch
Whipped coconut cream – will take this dish to a higher level of nutrition and taste (recipe below in notes)
