Making smoothies for breakfast is a godsend for those mornings where you are rushing around like crazy with no time to cook anything. This is one of my favorite recipes for making a tasty lemon ginger morning smoothie that keeps me fueled until lunch.

My lemon ginger smoothie surprised us all! Everyone who tasted this during my testing phase was blown away. I knew it would by hydrating, great for our digestions, and full of immune boosting goodies, but what I wasn’t prepared for was how delicious it is! The yogurt makes it creamy, the lemon juice and zest gives a tart flavour and the ginger isn’t overwhelming, but oh boy does it give this smoothie a unique flavor.

3 Reasons why you should drink this smoothie:

Improved gut health – Ginger works as a fantastic digestive aid by stimulating digestive acids and secretions, which in turn supports the food digestion and nutrient absorption.

Relieve inflammation – On top of its digestive benefits, ginger is also widely used for its potent anti-inflammatory benefits as well. Numerous studies have found that adding ginger into your diet can help with managing the pain caused by chronic inflammatory diseases like arthritis.

Immune system support – Thanks to the diverse blend of ingredients that go into making this smoothie, you are getting an incredibly wide range of essential vitamins, minerals, dietary fiber, antioxidants, and other phytonutrients. These ingredients all work together in tandem to keep your immune system strong and healthy.

A smoothie doesn’t have to be thick and gloppy or filled with exotic powders and supplements to be healthy. This one is light, refreshing, and supercharged thanks to four simple, real foods. None of these ingredients are a magic bullet, but they are strong components of a healthy diet and their legendary health benefits are being actively studied by the medical community every day.

Yogurt: amino acids found in protein are essential for T-cell function, which are cells that protect the body against pathogens. Yogurt contains probiotics, or friendly bacteria that helps keep the gut healthy and may boost the immune system. Look for the words ‘probiotics’ or ‘live active cultures’ on the label. (source)

Lemon: full of Vitamin C and antioxidants, lemon is a powerhouse ingredient. If you can find an organic lemon, its a good idea since you’ll be using the zest.

Ginger: also Vitamin C and antioxidant rich. It helps with digestion, especially when eaten on an empty stomach. It’s being studied for possible antibacterial and antiviral properties. Use fresh ginger, which gives the most benefits. (source)

You can easily change gears too and transform this recipe into a green smoothie by adding a handful or two of baby spinach or kale leaves (don’t worry – you won’t even taste them). Or, if you are a citrus rebel, substitute the lemon for lime (yum!). Take my word for it, this lemon smoothie is the zest!

Want to change up this lemon smoothie with mix-ins instead? There are a few additions that go well with the tropical flavors here! Here’s what we’d recommend trying:

Protein: Easily add more protein to a smoothie by adding 1 scoop of your favorite protein or collagen powder.

Add cashew butter. A way to add plant-based protein is nut butter; we recommend the flavor of cashews here to complement the lemon. Keep in mind this can also dampen the flavor of the smoothie.

Swap out the banana for a cup of frozen pineapple, mango or peaches or frozen fruit of another variety.

Throw in coconut. Throw in a handful of coconut (or toasted coconut) for a tropical vibe.

To summarise….drinking this smoothie will make you feel so good you will feel you can leap tall buildings in a single bound.  😊
