This quick and easy healthy homemade magic shell is the perfect chocolate topping for frozen fruit, smoothies, or any cold treat! It creates a delicious, set, chocolate topping with a wonderful texture contrast; shake over some colourful sprinkles or chopped nuts and/or grated chocolate and you are good to go!

It is really easy to make, uses only 2 ingredients, and you can use your favourite chocolate. It works well with white, milk and dark chocolate.

What causes magic shell to harden?

Coconut oil! Coconut oil is solid at room temperature. When you warm it, it turns into a liquid – you may have noticed that this can even happen in the middle of summer – the coconut oil in the pantry definitely starts to go soft, if not liquid. To make the sauce, you melt coconut oil with chocolate. Once the sauce comes into contact with the cold ice-cream, the coconut oil reverts back to it’s solid state, creating the hard shell…it’s magic!

The best thing about this sauce is that it takes less than 5 minutes to make. Less time than it takes for the ice cream to soften enough to scoop it!

Ingredients

Nice Cream

  • 2 cups strawberries, frozen
  • 1 banana, sliced, frozen
  • 2 scoops protein or collagen peptides powder
  • 1/4 cup any milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Chocolate Magic Chocolate Shell

  • 1 cup chocolate chips or semi-sweet chocolate, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil
  • Sprinkles

Instructions

Nice Cream

  • Add all ingredients to a high-speed blender. Blend and mix well until smooth and creamy. (Note: it will take at least 2-3 minutes)
    Serve this strawberry soft-serve nice-cream immediately or freeze it for hard-scoop ice cream.

Chocolate Magic Chocolate Shell

  • Place chocolate chips and coconut oil in small dish and microwave with 20 second bursts stirring between each one until melted and smooth.
    Or use double boiler method - (pot of boiling water with a bowl resting on top) melt the chocolate chips and the coconut oil together.
    Once melted, pour into a glass jar and store on the counter until ready to use.
    Spoon the magic shell sauce over a scoop of ice cream and watch it magically harden before your eyes!
    When you are ready to serve:
    Scoop your ice cream into a bowl or ice cream cone.
    Drizzle over the chocolate sauce
    Very quickly shake over the sprinkles, before the sauce sets. EAT and ENJOY!
    Store your magic shell sauce tightly covered in the pantry. Plan to use within a month.
