At Blended Bites, we believe that nourishing your body does not have to be complicated. It is about adding more goodness to your day, one simple choice at a time. And these homemade wellness shots are a lovely way to do exactly that!
Why You Will Love These Red Wellness Shots
There is something satisfying about making your own fresh drinks from whole ingredients. You choose what goes into them, adjust the flavours to suit your taste and avoid paying premium prices for small bottles of ready-made wellness shots.
Beetroot provides the earthy foundation, while blueberries bring a natural sweetness that balances its stronger flavour. Fresh ginger adds a lively, spicy note, and lemon juice brightens everything with a refreshing citrus finish. The result is a concentrated, flavourful drink that is perfect for enjoying in a small glass as part of your morning routine.
Unlike many commercial drinks, this recipe doesn’t need added colours, artificial flavours or preservatives to make it appealing. The beautiful red colour comes naturally from the ingredients themselves!
The Benefits Of Beetroot
Beetroot is the star of this recipe, and for good reason. Its rich red-purple colour comes from natural pigments called betalains, which have antioxidant properties. Beetroot also supplies folate, potassium and other nutrients that contribute to a balanced diet.
Beetroot contains naturally occurring nitrates, which the body can convert into nitric oxide. This helps support healthy blood vessel function and can contribute to normal blood pressure regulation.
Research has also explored beetroot juice in relation to exercise performance and circulation, although the effects vary between individuals. Fresh beetroot has a distinctive earthy taste, but blending it with blueberries and lemon creates a much more balanced flavour. If you have previously avoided beetroot because of its strong taste, this combination might change your mind!
Blueberries Bring Antioxidant Goodness
Blueberries are another wonderful addition to these wellness shots. These little berries contain anthocyanins, the natural pigments responsible for their deep blue-purple colour. These compounds have antioxidant properties and are among the reasons blueberries are valued as part of a varied, healthy diet.
Blueberries also provide vitamin C, vitamin K and fibre, although some fibre is removed when the blended mixture is strained. Their natural sweetness helps soften the earthy flavour of beetroot, making the finished drink more enjoyable without needing lots of added sweetener. Fresh or frozen blueberries both work beautifully, so you can make this recipe throughout the year.
Ginger and Lemon: A Zesty Combination
Fresh ginger gives these shots their characteristic warming kick. Ginger contains naturally occurring compounds called gingerols and has a long history of culinary use. Research suggests that ginger may help relieve certain types of nausea, although these wellness shots shouldn’t be considered a treatment for medical conditions.
Lemon juice brings a bright, citrusy flavour that lifts the entire recipe. It also provides vitamin C, which supports normal immune function and helps the body absorb iron from plant foods. Together, ginger and lemon create a refreshing contrast to the sweetness of the blueberries and the earthiness of the beetroot. Start with a small piece of ginger if you are sensitive to spicy flavours, then increase it to suit your preference.
Why Make Your Own Instead Of Buying Them?
Shop-bought wellness shots can be convenient, but making your own offers several advantages.
You control the ingredients. You can use fresh produce and avoid unnecessary added sugars, flavours or other ingredients you don’t want.
They are often more economical. A single batch can produce several small servings, potentially costing less than purchasing individual bottles.
You can customize every batch. Prefer more ginger? Add it. Want extra lemon? Squeeze some in. You can adjust the flavour and intensity to suit your taste.
They are freshly prepared. You blend the ingredients yourself rather than purchasing a bottled product that may have undergone processing or extended storage.
You can experiment with extra nutrition. Add a little protein powder, chia seeds before blending, or other fruits and vegetables to create your own combinations.
One important point: homemade does not automatically mean healthier or safer. Wash produce thoroughly, use clean equipment and refrigerate your shots promptly. Fresh homemade drinks have a shorter shelf life than many commercially processed products.
Should You Add Protein Powder?
Although protein isn’t essential in a traditional wellness shot, adding a small amount can be useful if you want to incorporate more protein into your routine. Choose an unflavoured protein powder or a mild vanilla variety that complements the fruit.
However, protein powders can make drinks foamy, thicker or slightly gritty, especially when the mixture is strained. For the smoothest result, blend the protein powder thoroughly and strain the drink before serving. You can also leave it out entirely and enjoy the recipe as a simple fruit-and-vegetable shot.
A Little Daily Addition
At Blended Bites, our philosophy is Addition Eating. Rather than focusing only on what to remove from your diet, think about what you can add: more colourful fruit, more vegetables, more variety and more nourishing ingredients.
These Healthy Red Wellness Shots are an easy way to bring beetroot, blueberries, ginger and lemon into your day. Enjoy them alongside a balanced diet, rather than viewing them as a detox or a substitute for whole fruits and vegetables. Blend a batch, pour into small glasses and enjoy a fresh burst of ruby-red goodness!
