Banana Protein Chocolate Bites

Banana Protein Chocolate Bites

Creamy peanut butter, sweet banana and a rich chocolate coating – with a protein boost

If you love the combination of banana, peanut butter and chocolate, these Banana Protein Chocolate Bites are going to disappear quickly. They are inspired by the simple chocolate-covered banana bites made with banana, peanut butter and melted chocolate, but with one delicious Blended Bites upgrade: protein powder.

The idea is wonderfully simple. Banana slices are topped with a creamy peanut butter protein mixture, frozen until firm, then dipped in silky dark chocolate. Once frozen, the banana becomes almost ice-cream-like, while the chocolate coating gives you that satisfying snap when you bite through it.

And this is exactly the kind of recipe I love. A handful of simple ingredients, virtually no preparation, no oven required and a result that feels much more indulgent than the ingredients suggest.

Why You Will Love These Banana Protein Bites

There is something magical about frozen banana. It becomes creamy and cold, making it the perfect base for a bite-sized frozen dessert.

Bananas also provide natural sweetness, which means there is no need to add lots of sugar to the peanut butter layer. Choose a ripe banana with plenty of natural sweetness for the best flavour.

Then there is peanut butter.

Banana and peanut butter are one of those combinations that just work. The creamy, slightly salty peanut butter balances the sweetness of the fruit beautifully. For this version, we are mixing protein powder directly into the peanut butter to create a thicker, protein-rich filling. Vanilla protein powder is particularly delicious here, although chocolate protein powder would also work if you want to take the chocolate flavour even further.

And finally, chocolate. A coating of melted dark chocolate transforms these simple banana slices into something that feels like a proper dessert. A little coconut oil helps make the chocolate smooth and easy to dip, just as in the inspiration recipe.

You can leave the chocolate coating smooth and glossy or finish the bites with chopped peanuts, coconut, cacao nibs or a tiny sprinkle of flaky sea salt.

A Healthy Treat Does Not Have To Be Complicated

One of the things I love most about these bites is how little effort they require. There is no food processor, no baking, no complicated ingredients and barely any washing up.

Simply slice your banana, add the peanut butter protein mixture, freeze, dip in chocolate and freeze again.

That’s it.

They are also perfect for keeping in the freezer. Make a batch when you have a few ripe bananas that need using, then pop the finished bites into a freezer container. Whenever you want something sweet, you can grab one straight from the freezer.

They make a lovely afternoon snack, a post-workout treat or a healthier answer to those moments when you really want chocolate. And because they are bite-sized, you can enjoy one or two without having to make an entire dessert.

Make Them Your Own

There are plenty of ways to customise these little bites.

Use almond or cashew butter instead of peanut butter, or try a plant-based protein powder if that is what you prefer. You can also use milk chocolate or dark chocolate for the coating depending on your taste. For extra crunch, sprinkle chopped roasted peanuts over the chocolate before it sets.

For a coconut version, add a little shredded coconut. Or keep things wonderfully simple and let the three star ingredients – banana, peanut butter and chocolate – do all the talking.

That is often when simple recipes are at their best. ✨

Ingredients

  • 2 ripe bananas
  • 1/2 cup natural peanut butter
  • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup, optional
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Chocolate Coating

  • 1 cup dark chocolate chips or chopped dark chocolate
  • 2 teaspoons coconut oil

Optional Toppings

  • Chopped roasted peanuts
  • Shredded coconut
  • Flaky sea salt

Instructions

  • Line a baking tray or plate with parchment paper.
Slice the bananas into rounds approximately ½ to 1 inch thick.
In a small bowl, mix the peanut butter, protein powder, vanilla and salt until smooth and creamy. If your peanut butter is particularly thick, add the optional maple syrup to loosen and sweeten the mixture.
Spoon a small amount of the peanut butter protein mixture onto each banana slice (around 1 small teaspoon). I usually just eyeball this and put as much on there as seems will stay nicely.
Place a tooth pick in each and place in the freezer for 30–45 minutes, or until the peanut butter layer has firmed up.

Chocolate Coating

  • Place chocolate chips and coconut oil in small dish and microwave with 20 second bursts stirring between each one until melted and smooth.
Or use double boiler method - (pot of boiling water with a bowl resting on top) melt the chocolate chips and the coconut oil together.
Carefully dip each of the banana bites into the chocolate so that the banana is mostly covered. I left the peanut butter part mostly uncovered but you can cover that as well if you wish.
Sprinkle with chopped peanuts, coconut, cacao nibs or flaky sea salt while the chocolate is still melted, if desired.
Place on a parchment lined plate and place back in the freezer for 10 minutes. I like to store mine in the freezer until ready to eat so that they are almost like a little ice cream bite.
Store the bites in an airtight freezer-safe container for up to 1 month. They can be enjoyed straight from frozen or allowed to sit at room temperature for a few minutes for a softer texture.
