How do you feel about protein shakes? I have one almost every day – I love that they are so customizable, you can pack them with so many nutrients, and they are so easy to make. And this one is so dang good! It’s one of my favorite recipes, which says a lot since I make so many different kinds. It doesn’t hurt that it tastes like a healthy chocolate milkshake.
Even though I have been drinking chocolate shakes and smoothies for years I can still continually come up with new recipes to keep breakfast interesting. This chocolate smoothie not only tastes like it’s too good for breakfast but provides more than just tasty protein. You can totally customize the amounts of carbs and protein to fit your lifestyle and activity level.
Better yet, this shake is also very balanced. It emphasizes carbs and protein for fitness recovery, while also having some healthy fats and fiber to help with fullness. This chocolate protein shake keeps me full for a handful of hours and has been my go-to after workouts.
Protein shakes are a great healthy addition to any diet when made with the right ingredients. They can be loaded with vitamins and minerals but its also important to have balanced macronutrients with protein, fat, and fiber (along with the carbs) so they fill you up, digest slowly, and don’t spike your blood sugar.
This healthy chocolate shake recipe is creamy, chocolaty, and ready in just 5 minutes with 7 ingredients! The best thick and creamy chocolate protein shake ever! And the recipe is for one, all for you. No need to share!
You can enjoy this Chocolate Protein Shake as a pre- or post-workout drink, a healthy snack to quell sugar cravings, or even for breakfast!
McDonald’s chocolate milkshakes have always been my favorite treat, even as an adult. These days, though, they have been replaced with a healthier, but just as delicious option: this protein-rich chocolate shake.
When I developed this recipe, I wanted it to look and taste just like a McDonald’s shake- thick, creamy, and packed with chocolate flavor. After testing different protein powders and flavors, I found that the key to achieving a milkshake taste is using cocoa powder. The best part? You can use any protein powder and still curb your milkshake cravings with something more wholesome, filling, and free of the sugar crash.
Chocolate protein shake recipe highlights:
Quick and easy. It’s ready in just thirty seconds.
Customizable. Add even more protein, rolled oats, frozen fruit, hemp seeds etc
Healthy. It’s low in carbs, calories, and refined sugar-free. The 30 grams of protein doesn’t hurt, either.
Easy to make, healthy shake that tastes amazing
Powers up your morning or post-workout routine
Ingredients you will need:
Banana: We want the banana flavor to be virtually non-existent, but for it to add nutrition and create a thick creamy texture. Make sure to completely freeze a fully ripe banana before adding to this shake. Also, don’t use more than 1/2 cup or it will be more banana-flavored than chocolate.
Peanut or almond butter: Again, we want the main flavor to be chocolate, but the nut butter adds protein and healthy fats. It also adds a nice creaminess and subtle flavor. We only add 1 tablespoon so that the flavor isn’t overpowering. My personal favorite is almond butter (much more subtle), but use whichever you have on hand or like better.
Almond milk: My favorite milk in this shake, but any milk works. I like the vanilla flavored for even more flavor.
Sweetness: For a sweeter protein shake, add a teaspoon of honey or maple syrup or add 2 dates.
Nutritional Booster: Add baby kale or spinach: You can use fresh or frozen greens.
Meal prep hack: Prep the shakes and place in an ice cube tray, then store the cubes in a freezer-safe bag for up to 6 months. To re-blend, add the cubes with a splash of milk to a blender and blend until smooth.
This Chocolate Shake is not only delicious, but it will do your body good. It’s super smooth and creamy, and slightly sweet which helps to make it feel like a treat. The nut butter adds in protein and healthy fats so this smoothie should keep you full until your next meal. I love it with a sprinkling of dark chocolate chips to just take it over the edge.
