Ingredients

  • 1 13.5 oz coconut cream, full fat (solid part only) *see note below
  • 1/2 cup chocolate protein powder
  • 1/4 cup chocolate hazelnut spread (Nutella) (or homemade recipe below in notes)
  • 1-2 tablespoons maple syrup or honey to taste (optional, depending on sweetness of protein powder)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of sea salt

Optional Mix-Ins

  • 1/4 cup chopped roasted hazelnuts
  • 1/4 cup dark chocolate chips
  • Extra chocolate spread swirled through before freezing

Optional Toppings

  • Chopped roasted hazelnuts
  • Dark chocolate shavings
  • Fresh strawberries
  • Sliced banana
  • Chocolate drizzle
  • Sprinkles

Instructions

  • Note: Place the can of coconut cream or milk in the fridge or freezer for at least 1-2 hours before making these bars to allow coconut cream to separate.
Open chilled can and scoop out the cream that has separated and set hard on the top into a blender or food processor. Save the remaining coconut water to use in a smoothie, drink, or discard.
Add the chocolate hazelnut spread, protein powder, cocoa powder, maple syrup (if using), vanilla and sea salt.
Blend until completely smooth and creamy.
    Fold through any optional mix-ins.
    Transfer to a freezer-safe container.
Swirl through extra chocolate spread if desired.
Freeze for 3–4 hours until scoopable.
If frozen solid, allow the nice cream to sit at room temperature for 10–15 minutes before serving.
Scoop into bowls and top with your favourite toppings.
Store in an airtight freezer-safe container for up to 2 months.
For the creamiest texture, let it soften slightly before scooping.

Homemade Chocolate Protein Spread
Discover homemade healthy chocolate protein spread and you will never buy it at the store again. It’s smooth, chocolatey, and SO easy to make!
Super rich and creamy, it effortlessly holds its own with any of the chocolate spreads at the grocery store. And yet the homemade version also has fewer than half the calories per serving.
It’s much healthier than store-bought, without sacrificing any of the kid friendly classic chocolate taste that we all know and love. This sugar-free Nutella version is creamy and smooth, with a rich chocolate hazelnut flavor.
I have been making sugar-free chocolate spread for well over a decade now. And in fact, I may have been the first person to develop a recipe for it. It was way back in 2011, when I was craving some chocolatey deliciousness and it’s been a favorite ever since.
I was astonished that it was so easy to make my own homemade version. Best of all, I like it even better than the original. Because it is less tooth-achingly sweet, the chocolate hazelnut flavor shines through even more.
My whole family loves this delicious spread. We put it on everything - slathering on toast, drizzling on crêpes, mixing into cookie dough, on pancakes, cheesecake, puddings, smoothies and smoothie bowls  – you name it, we will drizzle this over it. But I am also not above spooning it right out of the jar and straight into my mouth.
Its a decadent and healthy addition to breakfast, dessert or healthy snacks.
